Hydrotherapy Pool – Plant Upgrade

Gibraltar Barracks is a principal training centre for the Royal School of Military Engineering (RSME).

As part of the training provision, the site includes a full-size hydrotherapy swimming pool associated with gymnasium and rehabilitation therapy facilities.

The existing pool plant was beyond maintainable life cycle and together with existing boiler plant and pool hall ventilation an upgrade required.

The pool water temperature is maintained significantly above traditional pool temperatures and consequently pool ventilation and humidity control are critical.

The facility is in high demand and downtime needs to be minimised.

Plant Upgrade:

The following plant and associated equipment required upgrade / replacement.

a) Pool water treatment, heat exchanger and filtration.
b) Main gas fired boilers, associated LPHW distribution pipe work.
c) Flue systems.
d) Controls / BMS.
e) Pool Ventilation (heat recovery and humidity control).
f) Gymnasium Ventilation.
g) Ancillary areas heating and ventilation, including chemical store extract systems.
h) Plant room and external lighting.

Program Planning:

To minimise downtime, the boiler plant was offsite factory fabricated on a skid. This enabled fabrication to proceed whilst existing plant was stripped out and the plant room prepared for installation of the replacement equipment.

Boiler skid with complete with Hamworthy modular boilers, LPHW, gas distribution, pumps and controls.

System factory fabricated in two sections for ease of site positioning.

Key Design Issues Resolved:

• Duty selection of replacement equipment
• Upgrade of building gas supply
• Ventilation design
• BMS control upgrade and integration to site wide BMS Supervisor.
• Structural design to integrate to existing building arrangement.

Key Challenges:

• Logistics of plant removal and replacement
• Positioning new equipment and off-site fabricated skid system.
• Minimise operational pool downtime.
